Zombie Films, Fab or Fail?
We all love a good horror film. And the zombie apocalypse is a good way to draw the latter love of Reality T.V. closer together with the basic want to rip each other apart. The modern zombie apocalypse is filled with all the same drama that allows us as people to empathize with these almost real life scenarios. Though the zombie horror film is far fetched, it’s almost believable that the government would have some crazy bio-chemical weapon in the works. For some with stronger religious conviction, would you ever really rule out the possibility that God would want to eradicate us and start a new? Showing his unfaithful followers once and for all who’s in charge?
For some, The Zombie horror film has almost become a cliche. Everyone and their mother has made a freakin’ “Undead” film. Hell, broadcasting straight to the boob-tube are shows like the Walking Dead and Ugly Americans. Networks have brought the Flesh Eating Mongrels out to play. For others, Zombies have become a part of modern Pop Culture. It’s almost like over the last 8 years or so, Zombies have had sort of a “Coming Out” if you will. They’ve invaded our lives and ripped out our innards as we shout out in glee.
From comic books to novels. Zombie Walks/Runs to Zombie Balls. We see them on Halloween, on the streets, and on the Big Screen. It’s not even the end of the world yet, and already we’re swarmed by visions of the future. I wonder if the build up from the late 90’s and early 2000’s has finally come to fruition? As said in a George Romero film some time ago- “They are Us!” -Dr Logan, Day of the Dead.
Personally I’m almost done with the re-invention of the genre. It doesn’t truly matter to me whether or not the Living Dead keep on trekking. Only in the terrifying reality of the actual existence of life after death becoming truth will I ever care. But I urge people to never let go. Fad this out like Vampires did in the late 90’s so that 10 years later we’d still hate em. Next we’ll be able to primarily focus on Lycanthropes since they’ve never truly been in the spotlight. Or Horror can further embrace the serial killer some more, or even Trolls.
Anyway you hack it, Zombies aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. They come in too many varieties now. It’d be hard to choose. Fast, Slow, Alive, Undead….. Animal or human……
This article isn’t designed to give you the reader the impression that you should agree with me. This article is based on fan perspective. I too am a fan. I’m not saying I hate the Zombie film. Day of the Dead is still one of my favourite movies. I’ve just noticed the direction our hoards of grotesque monsters is sliding towards, and wanted a second opinion.
